MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS FOR UGC NET/JRF/SET : TEACHING APTITUDE TOPICS

In the NET/JRF exam, questions are asked for the following topics either direct or indirect. So, read carefully and increase your chances to qualify for JRF/NET.

Methods of Teaching

Microteaching
Is a teacher training for learning teaching skills. Stanford University was the pioneer in the microteaching concept started in 1961. It is more effective during preparation for teaching practice. It is useful for both primary & higher classes.

Brainstorming
It is a creative group work in which group members produce a large number of ideas on a given topic for subsequent evaluation. Spontaneity is the hallmark of brainstorming sessions.

Simulation
Creating conditions that are similar to actual conditions. ‘Pilots and astronauts training’

Individualized Teaching Methods

Case Study
It is an active learning method that requires participation and involvement from the students. It becomes an efficient tool for the creation of a learner-centered education rather than a teacher-centered education.

Heuristic Method by Armstrong
Students has to find out the answer to his/her own problem by unaided efforts. The main of this method is to teach how knowledge can be obtained by developing the spirit of inquiry.

Steps in Learning Process

Learner Characteristics
1.      On the basis of personal and social attributes.
2.    On the basis of learning styles: Felder & Silverman developed a category for analyzing learning styles.
3.      On the basis of listening skills:
a)      Active listening.
b)      Empathic listening: a form of listening in which we attempt to understand the other person.
c)      Evaluative listening or critical listening.
d)     Appreciative listening: a listing for enjoyment involves seeking situations involving relaxing.
4.      On the basis of thinking styles:
a)      Reflective thinkers
b)      Creative thinkers
c)      Practical thinkers
d)     Conceptual thinkers

How to deal with the Classroom Situations
·
Immediate action: If the students indulge in deviant behavior, the teacher must take instant action and not allow it to persist for a long time. The teacher should speak to the student after class.

·         Teaching with a sense of humor: As it has both beneficial effects – physical & psychological.

·         Stop teaching in case of misbehavior: The moment the teacher stops teaching, it is clear that the teacher means business and will not tolerate misbehavior in the class.

·         Talk to the parents: It will improve the behavior of the student and will give a better idea about the indiscipline of an individual student.

·         Change seats: Of the students that disrupt the class.
·         Adapt and be sensitive to the mood of the class: If the entire class is getting out of control, then it means that the activity is boring; the best way of controlling them is by changing the activity.

·         Counsel after the class: The most effective ways of tackling a student is by giving counselling after class. And the teacher should also explain the consequences of not improving.

In these last few days try to read 6-8 hours a day, 3 hours for the first paper and 5 hours for your subject paper and also try to solve papers as much as you can. Have a great time,
..Remember History is made by only those, who dare to fly..  try to come out of your comfort zone and work hard for a better future.   GOOd LucK guys... Don't forget to follow.....

Concepts, Nature, Characteristics of Teaching

Concepts of Teaching
  • Teaching can be both Informal (homeschooling during initial years of life by parents) & Formal (paid faculty as in coaching).
  • It is a planned activity to attain some predetermined goals and effective teaching depends on:-

v  How clearly, the students understand what they are expected to learn.
v  How accurately their learning can be measured.

Teaching Models
1.      Instructor-centered Teaching : or Pedagogical approach (is the art & science of teaching). The learner is dependent upon the instructor for all learning, as the instructor controls the pace of learning and what to be taught.
2.    Learner-centred: or Self-evaluation or Andragogical approach. The instructors facilitate the learning of students to acquire new skills by themselves (self-study).

Levels of Teaching

  •       Memory level of teaching MLT
ร˜  Herbart is the main proponent of MLT.
ร˜  Teaching-learning the process is ‘Stimulus-Response’ here.
ร˜  The evaluation of students is by – oral, written.

  • *Understanding the level of teaching ULT
ร˜  Morrison .....of...ULT.
ร˜  It is ‘memory plus insight’ and focuses on the mastery of the subject.
ร˜  It also develops the intellectual behavior of students.
ร˜  Evaluation by – essay and objectives questions.

  • *      Reflective level of teaching RLT
ร˜  Hunt ... of. RLT.
ร˜  Highest level of teaching (includes ULT+MLT).
ร˜  It is a problem-centric approach of teaching.
ร˜  Evaluation by- essay test, involvement of students.
ร˜  Classroom environment is to be “open & independent”.

o   Teaching changes according to time, place and different variables.
Students are dependent variables, Teachers are independent variables as they can manipulate the behavior of students and Teaching methods are intervening variables.
NOTE ‘Teaching can be done without indoctrination but no indoctrination is possible without teaching’.
Principles of Teaching
1.     Motivation: creates curiosity among students. (if you want tips on self-motivation comment)
2.     Learning by doing: Froebel’s Kindergarten system (KG).
3.     Generating interest among students to increase the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process.
4.     Learning by life experiences (Ishq Ek ehsaas hai jo explain Nahi Kiya Ja Sakta hai).
5.     Principle of definite aim by making learning more focused (Karna hai to UPSC/JRF hi crack Karna hai).
6.     Principle of recognizing individual differences: all are not intelligent some are average. The teaching method should be such that all students are made avail to equal opportunities.
7.    The selection of teaching content should be more relevant and updated in this digital world.
8.     Teaching should be systematic to make optimum use of resources within the time limit.
9.     To make learning easier, topics should be divided such that it has links between each other.
10.  Principle of revision: sab Kuch na pade jo pade usko bar bar revise kare.
11.  Recreation of study: in your own words to be more creative.
12. Principle of democratic dealing: performing different activities (dance, speech, debate, play) to develop self-confidence.
13.  Principle of remedial teaching: it helps teachers to identify mistakes and suggest the best solution to the problems.

       Classification of Teaching

There are two classifications: Blooms Classification and Gagne & Briggs Classification.

Gagne and Briggs Classification: the learning outcomes fall under one of the following categories:-
